Anambra calls for review of Federal allocation
Anambra, Headlines, State News Wednesday, May 25th, 2011Anambra State government, yesterday, called on the Federal Government to review upwards its monthly allocation from N2 billion to N5 billion to enable it pay the N18,000 national minimum wage.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Chief Maja Umeh, government said the present wage bill with the N7,500 minimum wage paid workers stood at N1.2 billion and required more than N3 billion to be able to implement the minimum wage.
He said: “Anambra State will require an additional N3 billion to meet up the minimum wage. As a law abiding state, Anambra will obey the law on minimum wage but will require an improvement in her IGR and federal allocation.”
On government’s plan to streamline the state-owned radio and television parastatal, Anambra State Broadcasting Corporation, ABS, Umeh said government had set up a committee headed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Mr Dike Ndulue.
He said the exercise was not aimed at witch-hunting anybody or retrench people unjustifiably, adding that already laid off guest artistes were shown the way out of ABS because their engagement was irregular and abused.
