Anambra may ban Okada
Anambra, Headlines, State News Saturday, January 12th, 2013Anambra State government may clamp a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, in the state. This is coming at a time the state government has awarded contract for the construction of Uzoakwa-Ubahuekwem-Oseakwa road, with a spur to Oluoha Okechukwu road Ihiala.
Revealing this in Awka, at the weekly post-Executive Council Meeting, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Joe Martins Uzodike, said the Peter Obi government was seriously thinking towards banning Okada. He stated that the government is monitoring the operations Okada riders, especially as regards their excesses and would soon make its position known.
He said the council commended Governor Obi for giving a brand new car and sum of one million naira to the first Speaker old Anambra State, Chief Ifeanyi Enechukwu, to enable him take care of himself. The commissioner also announced that the State Executive Council agreed that all members of the council would, henceforth, engage on tax drive to encourage people to be responsive to their civic responsibilities.
Uzodike, who recalled that internally generated revenue formed bulk of the fund used in running government activities and projects in old Anambra State, said the present lukewarm attitude of the people towards tax payment was unacceptable. He revealed that the exco thanked the governor for giving a state burial to former Deputy Governor of Old Anambra State, Chief Austin Ezenwa of Abagana.
He said government had equally resolved to pay all his pensions and gratuities from the period he was the principals of the DMGS and CKC Onitsha as well as deputy governor of the state.
