Delta: Angry voters beat ballot thief to stupor
Delta, Elections 2011, State News Tuesday, April 26th, 2011ASABA – ONE of the gunmen who allegedly hijacked electoral materials meant for voting at Ekete and other parts of Udu local government area of Delta state was caught by voters at Orhuwhoron and given the beating of his life.
Vanguard learnt if not for the intervention of the police, he would have been lynched to death.However, security agents have launched a manhunt for his accomplices said to be on the run.
At unit 1, Abala-Unor in Ndokwa-East local government area, ballot thieves also struck and made away with the ballot boxes with the votes already cast.
A source said there were not enough security agents at the unit when the ballot thieves came, while at about 4.00 pm, sporadic shooting was reported at Ibusa between the vicinity of the Post Office and Ibusa Community Bank.
There was also disturbance at some polling units in Mosogar in Ethiope East local government area, while a crew of the Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS, Asaba who were covering the election were attacked on the East-West Road, at Uwheru, Ughelli area of the state with the windscreen of their vehicle destroyed.
At Owhe in Isoko area of the state, voters who refused to vote because of the failure of INEC officials to come with enough ballot boxes had start voting around 3.00 pm when they discovered that there was no help coming after more four hours.
Also at Ekwuoma, it was gathered that ballot boxes were stuffed with thumb-printed votes by a particular politician.
