Army redeploys embattled GOC

  • troops accuse him of sabotage

The last may not have been heard of the crisis rocking military operations in the north central part of the country as the presidency and military authorities are bent on getting to the root of the matter.

Already, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7, Division of the Nigerian Army in Borno, Major-General Abubakar Mohammed, was immediately relieved of his appointment as  General Officer Commanding, while  Brigadier-General  M.Y Ibrahim was appointed to replace him in an acting capacity.

Until his appointment, General Ibrahim, was one of the commanders of Operation BOYONA which was initiated to wipe out insurgency from the north east part of the country.

Embattled General Mohammed was flown into Abuja, via a Nigerian Air force C-130 plane. He was also accompanied by some of his lieutenants to explain some of the accusations leveled against him by troops under his command.

Presidency sources informed Daily Sun that there has been suspicion as to why the military operations against insurgency in the North east states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, was not yielding the desired result despite the huge amount of money spent on equipments and other logistics meant for the operations.

Three General Officers Commanding have so far been appointed  Since the creation of the 7, Division in Maiduguri, in less than one year.

The top presidency source who declined being mentioned, revealed that the worsening military operations in the region was beginning to make the president have a rethink as to why he even appointed new service chiefs in the first place.

Daily Sun authoritatively gathered that a good number of  officers and  soldiers have lost their lives in the last two month, owing to the leakage of information by some perceived Boko Haram sympathizers within the military who do not want government troops to kill their brothers.

The daily casualty figure of the injured and dead of military personnel posted to the north eastern  part of the country was beginning to give both the military authorities and the federal government a sleepless night.

Security sources hinted that while the issue of leakages of information was not uncommon during wars and special operations, it is the duty of those fighting such wars to as much as possible trace the fifth columnist in their camps.

Top military sources revealed that While the soldiers deployed to the North east are prepared to do what they know how to do best, some of the commanders there, are said to be frustrating their efforts, as they have on several occasions been ambushed by terrorists group who engage them in serious gun battle each time they embark on a vital operations to raid the boko haram camps, at the end of which the casualty figures can be better imagined.
