At Redeemers University, female students excel more than males

With a cumulative grade point average of 4.96, 19-year-old Ayomide Abiodun Oluwadare emerged the best overall graduating student of Redeemers University, Ogun State for the year 2011. For three consecutive times, female students of the university have beaten their male counterparts in this academic race.

Oluwadare, with registration number, RUN 07-08/1413, was among the 21 students that graduated with First Class Honours at the third convocation ceremony of the university, held recently at the RCCG Youth Camp.

The newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Debo Adeyewa, paid glowing tribute to the excellent performance of female students, since the inception of the university in 2005. He said female students have continued to excel more than their male counterparts.

To prove his case, among the 21 students that graduated with First Class Honours at the last ceremony, no fewer than eleven of them were females. The academic prowess of female students was displayed even in the most unlikely areas, especially courses that were mostly seen as tasking. For instance, Azubuike Ifeanyi Patience bagged First Class Honours in Statistics, while Obinwa Nneka Nyengimote had First Class in Computer Science. Also, Okoh Nneka Emmanuella made First Class in Microbiology, including Okenyeka Chidinma Frances and Ugwokegbe Gloria Akufor of Economics programme. Others include: Akin-Benson Jennifer Temitope, Oyetunde Olufunke Adetutu, Adeyeri Damilola Leah and Oluwatayo Omolaraeni.

Out of the 341 graduating students, 23 outstanding ones gained instant employment as Graduate Assistants from their alma mater. But the celebration of the overall best student, Oluwadare stood out, as she also smiled home with the Visitor’s prize of N50,000 for the best overall graduating student with the highest CGPA, awarded by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. She also won the Vice Chancellor’s prize of N25, 000, the College prize of N10,000, Dean’s prize of N15,000, Chief Oluremi Tinubu’s prize of N10,000 for the best graduating female student, among other coveted awards.
Adeyewa promised instant employment to the best graduating students of the school for the next five years in order to build a strong team of teaching staff for the institution.

“This year, 23 of our best graduates were appointed as Graduate Assistants and we hope to sponsor all of them for their Masters and Doctoral degree programmes. Presently, 15 of them who have gained admission into Nigerian and overseas universities have been offered scholarship by the university. It is hoped that our alumni will form the bedrock of staff that would help to uphold the traditions of honesty, integrity and excellence in the nearest future”, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the university’s focus on integrity, faithfulness, loyalty and excellence has paid off, which has made the institution a pacesetter in academic excellence in the country. According to him, the institution has produced 13 chartered accountants, 20 chartered marketers and four chartered insurers.

In an interview with Daily Sun, Oluwadare, who will clock 20 on January 1, 2012, attributed her success to God and good time management. She said her performance was inspired by the positive influence of some personalities that mentored her during her from her secondary school.

Parents of the best student, who were at the ceremony to share in their daughter’s glorious moment, told Daily Sun that their daughter was a rare gift from God. According to her father, Gabriel, the Head of Mechanical Engineering, Bells University, Otta, it took many years of strenuous toil before he could get married. So, when her first daughter was born, he named her, Ayomide, which translates to ‘My joy has come.’
However, death nearly robbed him of his joy when he fell sick shortly after his daughter was admitted at Redeemer’s University in 2007. “I was in the hospital for one month and I almost died. Immediately, I came back, I was told that her CGPA was 5.0 and that revived me,” he said.
