Bauchi govt agrees to pay N18,000 minimum wage

AFTER holding series of meetings with the leadership of the organised labour in the state, the Bauchi State government has agreed to pay the N18,000 national minimum wage to civil servants in the state from this month.

Addressing journalists shortly after reaching agreement with labour leaders on Monday, the state Head of Sevice, Mr Abdon Gin, said in view of the Federal Government’s agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on the minimum wage, the state governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, directed that negotiation with the state labour should commence in earnest.

He noted that series of meetings, the government and the labour agreed on the implementation of the new minimum wage in the state, adding that the effective date for workers earning below N18,000 would be April 1, 2011, while those earning N18,000 and above would have September 1, 2011 as their effective date.

Gin further stated that government would pay all arrears of the new wage in three months as from this month.

He declared that as part of agreement reached with the labour, no worker would be victimised for participating in the negotiation process.

“Today, we have arrived at an amicable and mutually agreed destination for the implementation of the minimum wage,” Gin declared, adding that the true spirit of collective bargaining was demonstrated by the government and the labour during the negotiation.

Also speaking, the state NLC chairman, Mr Hashimu Gital, expressed appreciation to the state government and the joint negotiating council for the success of the wage negotiations.
