Benue students protest killing of colleague
Benue, State News Thursday, March 29th, 2012Hell was let loose on Wednesday evening as students of Benue State University, Makurdi stormed the Gboko/ Makurdi highway to protest the killing of a 400 level student who was killed by an articulated lorry.
The Nigerian Tribune learnt that the security operatives drafted to the troubled area to beef up security, allegedly killed another student, leading to serious protests by the students.
The Nigerian Tribune further gathered that the students, who trooped out in their large numbers, disrupted vehicular movement while the police had a hectic time dislodging them.
Consequently, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Charity Angya, has ordered the immediate closure of the institution, urging the students to proceed on Easter vacation with immediate effect.
Speaking on the unrest, the state police spokesman, Mr Alaribe Ejike, denied the killing of a student by the police in the unrest that trailed the death of the 400 level student, who was crushed by an articulated lorry.
The 400 level student was said to be crossing the road when the lorry, loaded with cement, crushed him to death.
The driver reportedly fled after the incident.
