Boko Haram: Nigeria won’t break up – Borno Gov (What are you afraid of?)
Borno, Governors, State News Tuesday, June 26th, 2012Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has declared that Nigeria will not break up on account of the recent wave of terrorism blowing across the North.
Governor Shettima, who made the declaration at a technical session of the ongoing Senate retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, said Nigerians needed to imbibe the spirit of living together.
The governor noted that Nigerians needed to realise that God did not make a mistake by making them adherents of different religions, declaring that it was impossible for the country to break along religious lines on account of the recent outbreak of violence.
He said: “My appeal to Nigerians is that we must learn to live together. God who created us did not make mistake. If he had wanted, he would have made it in such a way that we will all practice one religion. Our leaders at the various levels of government must also be reminded of the fact that it is not that easy to dismember Nigeria along religious lines. As we speak, of the six states in the South-West, four of the governors are Muslims, and in these states, we have substantial number of Muslims, tell me, are we going to throw them in the lagoon?
In the North, we have a substantial number of indigenous Christians. Are we going to kill all of them? Nigeria is too big for any group of persons to take it to ransom. However, as leaders, we must have the sincerity of purpose, commitment and political will to tackle these problems.”
The governor further said that his participation at the retreat was an indication that the Senate appreciated the challenges of security in Borno State.
According to him, “we briefed them and they have shown the willingness to partner with us, to ensure that we find lasting peace to the security situation confronting the North.
