Boko Haram: We no longer practise our religion -Borno elders

Borno elders, led by a former Minister of Petroleum, Dr Shettima Monguno, has said the face-off between the aggrieved sect of the Jama’atu Ahlus Sunnah Lid da’waati Wal Jihad a.k.a Boko Haram  and  federal law enforcement agents has denied the people of the state the peace they had enjoying and almost brought the society to its knees, since the beginning of the crises in the last three years.

The elders, drawn majorly from the Kanuri extraction stated this on Wednesday, while addressing newsmen at the resident of the former minister.

According to them, the people of Borno State could  no longer engage in any meaningful activities to sustain their lives. “Nowadays the people cannot perform the five obligatory prayers in congregation in mosques near their houses or perform the Friday prayers in several mosques in the town. We are no longer practicing our religion as desired.”

The elders comprised  Dr Monguno, Brigadier Geneneral Abba Kyari (retd); Mr Gaji Galtimari; Alhaji Bulama Gana; Mr Aisha Wakil; Abubakar Ghide; Mr Hamza Yarima; Modu Rijiya; Bulama Mali Gubio; Sheikh Goni Gapchiya; Alhaji Kyari Sandabe; Ibrahim Abba Gubio; Umaru Ibrahim and Imam Laisu.

The elders who declined commenting on why they did not involve people from other parts of the state and elders from the Christian faith, said they were neither elected nor appointed but that they volunteered themselves to speak on the issues concerning the state.

They said, so far, thousands of lives were lost and thousands others were either maimed or traumatised as people could no longer move from one point to another without being subjected to harrowing experiences.
