Canadian police arrest 20 year-old white man for ramming truck into Muslim family, killing four

(NNP) Canadian police in the City of London (Ontario) have arrested a 20-year-old white man, Nathaniel Veltman accused of ramming his Dodge RAM truck into a Muslim family out for an evening stroll. Four members of the family were killed, while a fifth, a nine-year old boy, is hospitalized with serious injuries. Police have categorized this as hate crime and intend to prosecute it as such. Witnesses say the accused rammed his truck at high speed into the family as they waited at a traffic light to cross the road. Veltman sped away from the scene and was arrested five minutes later at a location 7 kilometres away.

In the meantime, members of the public have been visiting the scene of the incident saying prayers and leaving flowers as a show of support for the Muslim community. Muslims in Canada have been under attack. In 2020, an attacker slit the throat of a Muslim man outside a mosque in Toronto killing him and in 2017, a man with automatic weapon killed six worshippers at a Quebec mosque. He was sentenced to life in prison. Politicians, including the country’s prime minister Justin Trudeau have come out with statements condemning the recent attack.
