CNPP ask EFCC to arrest OBJ over corrupt sales of public enterprises

Akwa Ibom State chapter of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to give EFCC and ICPC free hand to arrest the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for questioning over the sale on Nitel and the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON).

The group also asked both Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida to apologise to the nation for their recent show of shame, especially, if they have suddenly realised that they robbed the nation of her developmental privileges, adding that their display “of dirty linen in the public is provocative and unwholesome.”

CNPP, in a communiqué at the end of their stakeholders and leadership meeting, which was made available to Daily Sun yesterday, also charged President Jonathan to sign a pack with the United States army to combat the Boko Haram sect to ensure lasting peace in the nation even as they asked the president to “bluntly refuse negotiating with these faceless elements whose aims and motives are not known.”

The CNPP, which comprises all the political parties except the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, commended the Chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega and his team for the move made to sanitise the political system and asked the INEC boss to go ahead and delist all political parties without a functional secretariat across the country.

The conference called on the Federal Government to organise a national sovereign conference to collect input from all sectors, public views and relevant authorities across the geopolitical regions of the country on the areas of the constitution to be amended before sending to the National Assembly for harmonisation. The conference thanked Mr. President for initiating the six-year single term for all political office holders, while pleading with the National Assembly to play no politics on this crucial issue, which is being tailored to sanitise the polity and reduce crime and political violence.

While still commending the president for appointing Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the minister of finance, the group, however, appealed to the presidency to expedite action on issues and programmes that would facilitate job creation for Nigerian teeming youths by revamping ailing industries such as the Ajaokuta Steel Mill, Nigerian Newsprints Manufacturing Company (NNMC), ceramics industries and a lot more which had been abandoned by previous administrations.

“The conference strongly regrets the decision of the Federal Government to solely depend on foreign telephone providers (GSM), partnership which is being licensed by NCC; the conference also opined that the government should resuscitate MTEL to be among the service providers in Nigeria.”

The group condemned “the injustice meted against former president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami. It is a clear indication of corrupt practices and a total rape of the constitutional right of the incumbent. If injustice could be so highly exhibited at the level of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the poor masses have no hope.”
