Court sacks Benue Speaker
Benue, Headlines, State News Thursday, November 3rd, 2011The Court of Appeal, sitting in Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday, sacked the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Honourable Terhemwen Tarzohor.
The court also ordered that the certificate of return issued to the former speaker who represented Makurdi North state constituency be nullified and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should issue the certificate of return to Honourable Avine Agbum of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Justice Uchechukwu Onyenmena, who read the consolidated judgment, noted that the tribunal was right in its judgment delivered on September 8 because the election of Tse-Tsa ward did not comply with the Electoral Act.
The former speaker had proceeded to the appellate court to challenge the tribunal’s judgement.
The tribunal had in its judgment declared that the ACN candidate was the actual winner of the Makurdi North state assembly election on the ground that the results declared at Tse-Tsa ward was marred by malpractices.
The tribunal cancelled the election of the disputed ward and concluded that the ACN candidate won by 106 votes.
