CPC Crisis Deepens
CPC (Congress 4 Progressive Change), Headlines, Party Politics Wednesday, January 5th, 2011
The crisis rocking the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) deepened on Wednesday as the suspended Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Denis Aghanya, dragged the party’s Chairman, Sen. Rufai Sani Hanga, before an Abuja high court challenging his suspension from the party.
In the suit filed by his lawyer, Mr. Sunday Ameh, SAN, Aghanya is also challenging the appointment made into the party’s Board of Trustees.
The plaintiff asked the court to declare that no members of the CPC, a registered political party in Nigeria, could act as or perform the functions of the party’s Board of Trustees without being so appointed or confirmed by the National Convention of the party as prescribed by its constitution.
He prayed the court to declare that the decisions reached and taken (including the purported suspension of the plaintiff) by those parading themselves as party’s Board of Trustees whose nomination for appointment had not been confirmed or appointed by the national convention of the party was unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.
In his written address in support of his originating summons, the plaintiff asked the court for an order restraining CPC from recognizing those parading themselves as the members of the party’s Board of Trustees whose nomination for appointment had not been confirmed by the national convention of the party.
Consequently, he asked the court to make an order of perpetual injunction restraining the party from giving effect or taking further steps in furtherance of the decisions of those parading themselves as the party’s Board of Trustees.
Besides, in urging the court to nullify his suspension from the party, the aggrieved party said that it was only the Board of Trustees that had powers to discipline any member of the political group.
The court has adjourned the matter to January 14, 2011.wp_posts
