The Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) has called on Christians in northern part of the country to defend themselves against any attack made by any group of people, including the Boko Haram sect.
The National President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor made this call while reacting to the latest attack on a church in Gombe State where six persons, including wife of Johnson Jauro, Pastor of Deeper Life Christian Church in Nasarawo area were killed.
He said, “We call on Christians in any part of the country to defend themselves whenever they come under attack.”
The CAN president who was visibly angry urged Christians to remain steadfast in faith, adding that the latest murderous attacks would strengthen the resolve of Christians to be vigilant and be prepared to defend themselves whenever they come under attack.
The latest killing, according to the CAN helmsman, “has aptly confirmed what we have been saying that Christians should defend themselves since it has become obvious that the nation’s security agencies are either overwhelmed by the terrorists or that the hoodlums have infiltrated their ranks and therefore lack the capacity to do their duty of protecting lives and property of innocent Nigerians.
“I will not subscribe to the notion that Christians should quit the North because of the ceaseless attacks, rather I will urge them to be vigilant and be prepared at all times to defend themselves, their family members and their churches including their businesses with whatever is available to them,” he stated.
Oritsejafor said, “Nigeria belongs to all of us and “Christians must be able to worship their God in any part of this country. They must not be intimidated in any way by anybody because there has not been any report of Christians intimidating people of other faiths.”
Urging Christians to be law abiding, the CAN president called on them to muster courage to defend themselves and their families. “You must not allow anybody to enter your house or places of worship to kill your children and destroy your property without defending yourselves.”
He also called on the Federal Government and security agents in the country to make deliberate efforts to defend every Nigerian in any part of the country, saying that the 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom to all citizens of the country to reside and own property in any part of the nation.
Oritsejafor lamented the latest killing, describing it as barbaric, the height of madness, warning that the earlier the nation’s authorities tackle the menace of terrorism, the better for the peace and development of the country.
