Delta: Guber poll: FG deploys armoured tanks

The Federal Government has deployed more armoured tanks to Delta State, in readiness for next Tuesday’s gubernatorial election just as an elder statesman, Chief Moses Odeh, has sued for calm during the exercise.

Daily Sun investigation revealed that about 20 armoured tanks were deployed on Wednesday to Delta State from neighbouring states, such as Rivers and Bayelsa, where governorship election will not hold.
Dependable source told Daily Sun that the increase in both military personnel and the armored tanks was as a result of violence, bloodletting and all forms of criminality associated with the previous National Assembly exercise.

Investigation further revealed that the military authority decided to take such action, following the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attairu Jega’s indictment of Delta as one of the most violent states in the country during election period.

It was learnt that some of the military personnel and tanks had been deployed to riverine areas where rigging and violence was most prominent. Meanwhile, an elder statesman, Chief Moses Odeh, has called for restraint in Tuesday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

Odeh, who spoke with newsmen yesterday in Warri, urged natives of the state not to regard politics as a do or die issue, stressing that people should learn to accommodate on another. He lauded Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s victory in last Saturday’s presidential poll and commended Nigerians for turning out in large numbers to vote in the candidate of their choice.

He appealed to the perpetrators of bloody conflicts presently going on in some parts of the North to sheathe their sword and called for calm.
