Delta: Party, INEC officials clash
Delta, Elections 2011, INEC Politics, State News Sunday, April 10th, 2011
The agents of the leading opposition parties in Delta State engaged the state Independent Electoral Commission officials in Asaba in a shouting match after accusing the electoral body of hoarding result sheets for the National Assembly elections in the state on Saturday.
The agents of the DPP, a party seen as the greatest threat to the ruling party in the state (Peoples Democratic Party), and at the National Transformation party accused the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state of bringing in the result sheets for the elections late on Friday night without allowing them access to inspect them.
They insisted that the Hillux pick-up van marked FG 711 VO1, conveying the electoral materials should be opened for verification, a demand the INEC officials ignored.
When the vehicle was eventually opened, result sheets in six packs numbering 3,000 were seen at the goods compartment, fuelling speculations of some underhand dealings.
The DPP agents led by one Chief Chike Onukwu maintained that the previous day, all the parties had verified that there were enough materials for the entire elections, alleging that the fresh result sheets were ‘’meant to change the entire results of the elections because as we speak, there are already allegations of snatching of electoral materials in Ughelli North.”
Our correspondent observed that the forms marked EC 8A with Result Sheets boldly written on them were meant for the House of Representatives polls in the state.
But in his defence, the state REC, Dr. Gabriel Adah, explained that the materials arrived in Asaba late from Benin City.wp_posts
