Drug trafficking: Osun NDLEA nabs 60-yr-old woman, another
Headlines, NDLEA (Anti-Drug Agency) Thursday, April 5th, 2012THE Osun State command of the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 60-year-old grandmother, Aduke Adebusuyi and Hammed Lateef, 18, for allegedly trafficking cannabis sativa, popularly called Indian hemp.
The state commander of the agency, Mrs Anthonia Udu, disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with journalists in Osogbo.
According to Udu, Adebusuyi was arrested on the Iwo-Ibadan road on March 17, when officers of the NDLEA were on surveillance patrol.
She said the woman was caught with a bag of Indian hemp weighing 7.2 kilogrammes, and that the agency had been on her trail in the last six months.
According to her, “the woman who has only one child with many grandchildren, usually carries the illicit drug from Ibadan for onward distribution to her partners in crime living in Iwo.”
She said the other suspect, Lateef, was arrested in February with 40 kilogrammes of Indian hemp at Apoti village near Ilesa, Osun State and that he had been arraigned in court and remanded in prison custody.
The commander also stated that 547 kilogrammes of the illicit weeds were recovered on March 28, where they were kept in a bush at Araromi village in Isokan Local Government area of Osun State, however, no arrest was made in connection with this.
Mrs Udu vowed that men of her command were at alert to sabotage the tricks of drug barons and traffickers, who wanted to outwit security men, and that the fight against the indian hemp cultivation required concerted efforts.
“We need concerted efforts to deal with Indian hemp cultivation and trafficking since it has become obvious that drug trafficking poses great danger to security, we must join hands to combat the crime,” she said.
