Drunken police officer shoots hotel steward in Kano

A Deputy Superintendent of Police, Emeka Ubani, attached to the 35 Squadron in Jigawa State is now explaining the circumstances surrounding the shooting of an employee of a hotel, where he lodged.

The victim of the riot policeman, Friday Onwuka, a steward in the hotel is currently in critical condition at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in the Kano metropolis.

Acting spokesman of Kano State Police Command, U.M. Al-Awwal, informed newsmen that the MOPOL had been detained and was being interrogated at the command headquarters over the incident.

A female worker in the hotel, who witnessed the incident, alleged that the victim was shot in the chest twice by the policeman over undisclosed disagreement on the last floor of the four-storey New Paradise Guest Inn building.

Medical workers were said to be frantically battling to keep Onwuka alive, who sustained serious bullet wounds in the attack.

It was learnt that Ubani was allegedly acting under the influence of alcohol.

Ironically, the mobile police patrol van that rushed the victim and his assailant to the hospital reportedly crashed along State Road (around Maiduguri Road of the T-junction) with the victim and two other occupants.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, could not be reached when newsmen sought his comments. Persistent calls and text messages requesting him to respond to the incident were not unanswered.

However, findings showed that the police high command in Abuja had been briefed over the issue and had ordered a thorough investigation into the development.
