Another bad outing! That was what the Super Eagles had last night at the magnificent Uyo nest of champions, as Nigeria lost 0-1 to Uganda in an international friendly.
The defeat spoilt the fun of Nigeria’s first choice keeper, Vincent Enyeama who celebrated his 100th cap for the Eagles with the game. It was recalled that the Eagles had last year flopped at the same arena when they failed to beat South Africa in a Nations Cup qualifier that ended 2-2.
That draw saw Nigeria not qualifying for the Equatorial Guinea 2015 Nations Cup despite entering the race as defending champions.
Uganda’s goal came in the 80th minute when Faruku Miya’s close range shot from the edge of the box took a deflection before sailing into the net despite Enyeama’s effort at parrying it. Last night’s victory would be the fourth the Cranes who were ranked 71 in the world were recording over Nigeria in eight games.
Nigeria has won three of the previous matches involving both countries, while one game ended in a draw. Enyeama looking unruffled after the match told Supersports that though he would have loved to keep a clean slate on his day of glory, there was nothing to worry about as losing a game is part of the round leather game.
He thanked Nigerian soccer fans for their support over the years. Governor Godswill Akpabio had during the interval presented the Akwa Ibom born player with a special award for achieving the historic milestone of being a Super Eagles centurion.
The Eagles will jet out tomorrow for Nelspruit, South Africa where they will Sunday face Bafana Bafana in another friendly.
