Ebonyi workers begin indefinite strike
Ebonyi, State News Wednesday, September 7th, 2011The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ebonyi State have directed all public servants in the state workforce to embark on an indefinite strike, with effect from today, following the inability of the state government to implement the payment of the N18,000 minimum wage
A communiqué issued at the end of an emergency joint meeting of the state councils of the NLC, TUC and the Joint Public Service Negotiating councils (JPSNC), read by the state chairman of the NLC, Mr Ike Abugu, noted that the organised labour in the state had followed all the necessary negotiation procedures and exhausted all avenues for dialogue to no avail, in its efforts on the issue of payment of N18,000 minimum wage.
The communiqué noted that the table presented by the state government for implementation in the state was not in conformity with the Minimum Wage Act 2011 and not acceptable to the workforce in the state.
It further said the organised labour in the state would not accept any minimum wage short of the N18,000 as stipulated in the National Minimum Wage Act.
The communiqué also noted that the payment of the N18,000 minimum wage in Ebonyi State, as well as the arrears as contained in the Act, with effect from March 23 to August 2011, should commence immediately.
