Enugu Deputy Gov Slumps at Rally

Tension gripped residents of Enugu State Tuesday following reports that the state Deputy Governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, had slumped during a campaign tour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to Nsukka town.
He was however said to have been revived later at his residence in Enugu where he was immediately taken after the incident which took place at Ogige market, Nsukka.

This came as four persons were reportedly killed by suspected gunmen in a two-pronged robbery attacks in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, Tuesday. The attacks led to a pandemonium at the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) rally, with the crowd scampering for safety and running for dear lives.

The killings in the Borno capital came as the police authorities in the state disclosed that the attempted bombing of the rally where the governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, was expected to lead other candidates of the party, was foiled. Also Tuesday, four members of the Boko Haram fundamentalist group were arrested by the police.

Speaking to journalists Tuesday night, Police Public Relations Officer, Borno State Command, Lawan Abdullahi, disclosed that a member of the group arrested in the early hours of the day led the police to the hideout of the group where the arrest of the others was made and  a gun and 60 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.

According to an official of PDP  at Nsukka, Onyebuchi slumped while addressing officials of Ogige Main Market Traders Association, (OMMATA) right inside their secretariat. The incident, however, prevented him from participating in the Podium Discussion organised by the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Nsukka, where he was billed to represent the governor.

THISDAY gathered that Governor Sullivan Chime and his entourage later rushed to Nsukka to participate in the event but before his arrival,  most of the participants had left the venue as the governorship candidates of four political parties including Dr. Dan Shere of People for Progressive Change, PDC and Chief Okey Ozea of Labour Party, participated fully in the dialogue.
