FG reverses suspension of 4 UNIABUJA programmes
Abuja (FCT), Headlines, State News Thursday, April 5th, 2012THE Federal Government has bowed to the protest by students of the University of Abuja against the suspension of four programmes of the institution and has reversed the decision.
The reversal of the decision came after the students from the university in hundreds stormed the Federal Ministry of Education to further protest the sudden suspension of the programmes.
The students had staged protest, on Wednesday, on the university campus against the suspension of Medicine, Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture programmes of the institution.
The aggrieved student, carrying placards of various inscriptions refused to accept the explanations from the Minister of Education on why their programmes were suspended.
The students had, on Wednesday, barricaded the Gwagwalada Airport and disrupted the flow of traffic on the Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua Expressway for over three hours while protesting the suspension.
This compelled the authorities of the university to shut down the institution and asked the students to vacate the two campuses.
Professor Rufa’i, had on Tuesday, announced the suspension of the course on the pretext that they were run illegally after the National Universities Commission (NUC) denied the programmes accreditation status about three years ago.
The minister after due consultation with the vice chancellor of the university, Professor James Adelabu, rescinded the decision on the suspension of programmes.
She, however, gave the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Adelabu, six months to get everything ready for the accreditation of the four programmes. Adelabu had also made commitment that he could set all the necessary facilities ready for the NUC accreditation in six months.
