THE Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has said the Federal Government spent N3 trillion in the education sector from 1999 till date.
Senator Anyim, however, expressed displeasure that not much impact had been made to justify the expenditure.
The SGF, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Femi Olayisade, spoke in Abuja on Monday in his keynote address at the Civil Society/Stakeholders’ Roundtable on Education, organised by the Independent Service Delivery Monitoring Group.
He said: “From 1999 till date, the Federal Government has spent over N3 trillion in the education sector. Yet, I recall that during our negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) during the last strike, a principal demand of the lecturers was increased funding.
“I am happy that the Chief Executive Officers of many of the parastatals in the education sector are here. I, therefore, implore you all to consider the roundtable as an opportunity to discuss the ways and means of improving the system.
“Government’s investment in education has to be seen to be making the required impact.”
Senator Anyim said education was a key component in the transformation agenda of the present administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and that this informed the decision of the government to place great premium on the development and restructuring of the sector, in order to decisively address the current and future challenges of the nation.
Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, in her remarks, said government was concerned about the quality of products of the nation’s institutions.
