FG wants soldiers to intensify fight against terrorism

The Federal Government has urged operatives of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies to intensify the fight and explore new strategies to tackle the menace of terrorism confronting the country.

The Vice President, Alhaji Namadi Sambo, made the call while representing President Goodluck Jonathan at the burial of the 15 personnel of the Nigerian Army, comprising two majors and 13 soldiers, who were killed in action by members of the Boko Haram sect in Borno, Yobe and Darfur, in Abuja on Thursday.

Those laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery were Maj. AT Fambiya, Maj. A Kanoma, St.Sergeant Keku Adebayo, Cpl. Ahmed Usman, Cpl Mathew Ade, LCP Adamu Ibrahim, LCPL Suleiman, LCPL Salishu Saduki, LCPL Ajani Olusola and Bombardier Usman David

Others were Zakariya Dauda, Kantoma Daniel, Nya Bassey, Bassey Emmanuel and Enyenihi Effiong, who were all soldiers of the file of Private.

Jonathan said even though the death of the military personnel was a big loss to the country, the sacrifices they made for the preservation of the nation’s peace was not in vain as the country was winning the war against terrorism.

He said while those who gave their lives for the sake of peace deserved a befitting burial, the men of the Armed Forces and other security operatives had a responsibility to be focused in the fight against terrorists in order to defeat them.

The President said the country would not forsake members of the families of the late soldiers as all their entitlements and other welfare arrangements would be made available to them without delay.

He said his administration was determined to implement policies that would strengthen the nation’s security organs against any security threat, especially the Boko Haram insurgency.

He said, “We are here gathered to lay to rest the remains of two officers and 13 soldiers, who gallantly paid the supreme price. I want to reiterate that their sacrifices shall not and will never be in vain. Indeed for us, the loss is a thing of regret, but we take solace in the fact that we are winning the war.

“They shall rest in peace knowing that as members of the Armed Forces, you must appreciate the fact that, the military profession is a hazardous job, and in conflict like this, there are bound to be casualties, including death.

“Rather than despair and lose focus on our objective, it is incumbent on us to respect and honour the dead by giving them a befitting burial while we keep strategising to defeat the enemy.”
