Five killed in P-Harcourt cult attack

By Jimitota Onoyume

PORT HARCOURT – At least five persons were shot dead on Monday night at a drinking joint on Aggrey Road, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Sources who spoke to the Vanguard said the incident was cult-related, adding that the gunmen stormed the drinking joint close to the popular Agip filling station on Aggrey Road at about 9.30pm in search of their target.

But unknown to them, their target had left before they got there. So in their frustration, they shot some persons they met drinking at the joint.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, who confirmed the incident in his response to a text message from Vanguard, said only two persons were confirmed dead, noting that the issue was cult related.

The incident came barely two days after two cult groups clashed in Khana Local Government Area leaving three persons dead.

Two of them were allegedly murdered in Bane community. According to community sources, the killers fled with the head of one of those they murdered.

Caretaker Committee Chairman of the council, Mr Hyacinth Nwiye, who condemned the incident said the rampaging cultists also shot dead a lady in Kpaa community.

He said: “When I heard about the incident I quickly called the DPO to find out what happened. When I got there, I discovered that the corpses had been brought to the police station. I went with them to the mortuary where the corpses were deposited.

“I later discovered that one of the cultists that took part in this act was shot dead and beheaded. His head was taken away. We took the headless body to the mortuary.”
