For indigenes of Anambra State in the North American Diaspora, all roads lead to Toronto venue of the 2nd annual Anambra State Progressive Association (ASPA Canada) convention slated to start July 27th to July 29th, 2012. The convention whose theme is “Investing in People to Build Stronger Communities” will attract well over five hundred participants from more than twenty three countries around the globe including India, UK, South Africa, USA, Nigeria, etc.

To underscore its importance and relevance, quite a number of high ranking Anambra State officials, including the two-term state governor, Gov. Peter Obi, are either in Toronto or heading to Toronto (at press time) to interact, dialogue and proffer solutions to some of the daunting challenges of building stronger communities through sustainable development.

Participants will specifically address seemingly intractable issues in sustainable development in education in general and adult education in particular, in science, technology and strategic innovations, strategic business endeavors, research/publishing and viable community development programs and projects. All of these efforts are geared towards positioning Anambra States, one of the fastest developing states in the Nigerian federation, to remain relevant in the new economic order in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.

Speaking to New Nigerian Politics (NNP) from his base in Toronto, the president of ASPA, Mr. Chidi  Asidianya, noted the overarching objectives of the convention which is designed to invest in people and to ensure communal self-sufficiency. Said he, “This year’s convention is designed to invest in people by bringing experts from Nigeria and around the world to share knowledge and expertise.” He further noted, “Often times we take away from the state, but this convention gives us the opportunity to encourage citizens to give to the state by contributing to sustainable development and skills acquisition.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Elas Abone (Igwe – Akwudolueze III), a member of ASPA and a medical professional based in Toronto, in a chat with New Nigerian Politics reiterated the importance of knowledge sharing and capacity building among citizens of Anambra State. He noted, “It is vital for everyone in our community to be well informed and be part of the process of ensuring sustainable development. This convention provides a medium for us to rob minds and implement the viable recommendations to strengthen our communities and state.”

The convention which holds at the Marriot Hotel located at 901 Dixon Road, in Mississauga, Ontario includes a number of brainstorming sessions, panel discussions, a meet and greet, opportunities to network, a town hall meeting to be hosted by Gov. Peter Obi on Saturday, July 28th and much more.wp_posts
