Gowon, Obasanjo, Jonathan “missing” as Tinubu holds Council of State meeting

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, presided over the Council of State meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Naija News gathered that President Tinubu arrived for the meeting at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at about 1:30 p.m.
However, according to Daily Trust, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan were not sighted as at the time the meeting went into a closed-door session after the recitation of the national anthem.
Former Heads of State, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and Abdulsalam Abubakar, joined the meeting virtually. Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State also attended virtually.
Naija News reports that physically present at the chambers were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; four retired Chief Justices of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, Mahmud Mohammed, Alfa Belgore and Olukayode Ariwoola, as well as a majority of the state governors.
Also seated were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi and Governors of Kwara, Rivers, Enugu, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Borno, Ogun, Sokoto, Edo, Kaduna and Abia States.
The Council of State is constitutionally mandated to advise the President on matters of national importance, including electoral issues, population census, prerogative of mercy, and national security.
This is the second Council of State meeting to be hosted by President Tinubu after presiding over a similar meeting in August 2024.
Among other things, the meeting is expected to discuss issues around the prevailing insecurity in some parts of the country, as well as the possible choice of the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
