Gunmen kill former local council chairman in Borno
Borno, Local Govt, State News Sunday, February 5th, 2012Unidentified gunmen, disguised as mourners, on Friday night shot dead the former chairman of Damboa Local Government, Lawan Kabu.
Eyewitnesses told newsmen in Maiduguri on Saturday that Kabu was killed at his family house in Damboa, some 100 kilometers from Maiduguri, while mourning the death of his father who passed away on Wednesday.
“We were seated with him receiving condolences from sympathisers when two men who disguised as mourners came in.
“The people greeted everybody and offered their condolences before bringing out AK 47 rifles hidden in their dresses,’’ Isa Ibrahim, a witness told the News Agency of Nigeria.
Ibrahim said the gunmen shot the victim at close range before fleeing the victim’s house.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Simeon Midenda, who confirmed the incident said, “It is sad that people could disguise as mourners to kill the victim and fled without the members of the public making any effort to get them. How do you expect the police to get the killers when the people are not ready to assist?”
