Hard Drug: Four Governorship, Two Senatorial Aspirants Battle NDLEA
Governors, Headlines, NDLEA (Anti-Drug Agency) Tuesday, January 4th, 2011Four governorship aspirants and two senatorial hopefuls are presently in the battle of their lives to disentangle themselves from the black-list of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), without which, they may not be able to contest this year’s general election. A top NDLEA operative who confided in LEADERSHIP at the weekend in Lagos, stressed that the list with a covering letter from the agency would be forwarded to the respective parties of the political office seekers before the end of the week.
The source added that, “It was when the aspirants got wind of the move, that they started making contacts to prominent Nigerians to intervene on their behalf and since then, we have been receiving anonymous threat calls and emissaries from powerful individuals not to make the list public or pass it to their parties secretariats.
“But, we will not stop on our constitutional duty to the nation, even at the risk of our lives. Gone are the days, when they would use ill-gotten money to buy their ways into political offices and once there, continue in the perpetration of crime in this country. We will stop them.”
The candidates, two from the South-South zone of the country, one from the South-East and the other from the South-West, are currently on the watch list of the anti-narcotics agents. The South-South governorship aspirants, apart from the drug scandals, would have to clear their names from the corrupt public office seekers list, currently a guiding secret by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
The governorship aspirants, LEADERSHIP gathered, have allegedly had their hands stained in illicit drug business year’s back, after some of their peddlers were arrested by the operatives of NDLEA, and their names came up as financiers of the trade. “For instance, a suspect (name withheld) who presently, is serving his prison sentences in far away Thailand had written to NDLEA, confessing the nefarious activities of an aspirant.”wp_posts
