IAAF investigates Spanish visa denial row for Nigerian athletes

World athletics governing body IAAF has asked the Athletics Federation of Nigerian to write a report of what transpired between the Nigerian team to the World Junior Championships and the Spanish Embassy in Lagos.
The Nigerian juniors arrived two days into the championships here in Barcelona. This was after the Spanish embassy officials delayed issuance of visas to the team.
“The IAAF was not happy with the situation. President Lamine Diack has asked us to write a report of the incidence with a view of investigating it,” said AFN president Solomon Ogba.
He said that the behavior of the Spaniards in Lagos must be the last time Nigerian athletes are so treated.
“They said that we didn’t get written permission from the athletes’ parents. They also said we submitted our applications late. These are all lies, because we had letters from the parents and we put in applications two weeks early, moreso, the law governing the issuances of Shengen visas stipulates 10 days notice.
“What happened should never be allowed to happen again,” Ogba said.
