Illegal NYSC camp smashed in Niger
Headlines, NYSC (National Youth Service Corp) Wednesday, November 30th, 2011An illegal National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp has been smashed in Niger State by the state command of the State Security Service (SSS) and after a raid of the place by its operatives, no fewer than 34 victims of the illicit orientation camp were arrested.
Among the victims of the scam that were picked up within the premises of Kinkin Primary School, opposite the Federal University of Technology, Bosso campus, Minna, Niger State were 21 females and 13 males, including one of those behind the illegal NYSC orientation camp, identified as Kelechukwu Osinomumu.
Announcing the development at a media parley on Wednesday, Assistant Director of Security of the agency, Mr Essien Okon, said the victims who had allegedly volunteered information to the SSS, were being detained in its custody and would soon be released to their parents and guardians at the completion of the investigation of the case.
The victims of the scam were graduates of part-time programmes run by University of Calabar Consultancy Services, Cross River State; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State; University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus; Enugu State University of Technology and Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu State.
Essien stated that the victims explained in their respective statements how they parted with varying amounts of money to the fraudsters, some of who are now at large with a view to be integrated into the NYSC scheme and to possess the NYSC discharge certificate
“They made varying amount of payments ranging from N120,000 to N350,000 to the illegal NYSC orientation camp operators . And already one of the masterminds is in custody while the others are soon to be rounded up for prosecution, “ he stated.wp_posts
