INEC issues certificates of return amid tight security in Anambra

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday issued certificates of return to elected officials in the 2011 general election in Anambra State amidst tight security with only Dr. Andy Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) being the only senator-elect present.

The fear of chaos necessitated INEC inviting security agencies including the military to man the road to the INEC office where they only allowed candidates in INEC list of winners to take a walk of about three poles to the INEC office.

In the three senatorial seats, INEC announced that the winner of the Anambra Central, Dr. Chris Ngige of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was at the venue earlier but left and would later collect his certificate from the office of the Supervisory National Commissioner for Anambra, Imo and Enugu states, Dame Gladys Nwafor while it was silent on Anambra North Senatorial zone even when newsmen inquired about it.
In the list of persons elected, the space for name and party elected for Anambra North was blank while Dr. Uba collected his certificate as the elected senator for Anambra South.

Responding on behalf of the senators, Dr. Uba thanked the electorate for the confidence they reposed in them, assuring them of their resolve to give them qualitative representation.
He appealed to those who lost in the election to join hands with them for the development of the state, noting that a lot needed to be done for the state and the entire South East that requires the cooperation of all to achieve.
Also, speaking on behalf of the House of Representatives members-elect, Uche Ekwunife noted that for the first time, the state had witnessed a real election where there was one man one vote and the votes counted.
She commended INEC for conducting a credible election and hoped that by the next election, the country would have been better.
