Jang orders security for corps members on election duty

Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau has directed security agencies to provide maximum security for all National Youth Service Corps members involved in today’s elections in all parts of the state.
Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Mr. James Mannok disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Jos.

He said the directive was part of measures taken by government to ensure the security and safety of the NYSC members.
NAN reported that the move was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s directive that all state governors should provide security to all corps members.

This was in the wake of deaths recorded and injuries sustained by many corps members in the aftermath of the presidential election on April 16. Jang warned that the law’s full weight would be brought to bear on any individual or group planning to disrupt the peace in the state or interfere with the electoral process.

“Security agents have been briefed and adequately empowered within the ambits of the laws and rules of engagement to deal with trouble-makers before, during and after the elections. “Our teeming electorate should not be misled and deceived, but they should come out today to exercise their franchise. “All necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of lives and property of all citizens in the nooks and crannies of Plateau State,” he said in the statement.

Jang also said his attention had been drawn to malicious and mischievous text messages and publications intended to malign him by some political opponents. “As unfounded as the messages are, they were designed at the crucial moment of election and political transformation to mislead the electorate from doing the right thing. “The diabolical plans arose as a result of the more than one million votes garnered by the PDP during the presidential election.

“The sentiments being whipped by these desperate politicians are also aimed at creating disharmony and tension among the peace-loving people of the state so as to scuttle tomorrow’s election. “Indeed, the successful conduct of the elections so far has not gone down well with these crisis-merchants in the state, who camouflage as politicians,” he said. Jang said the security issues in the state should be those of proffering solutions rather than their politicisation to inflame more passion.
