John Lewis, a towering civil rights leader and long-serving U.S. Congressman, has died at 80
American Politics, Headlines, NNP News Saturday, July 18th, 2020(NNP) Famous U.S. Congressman who represented the 5th Congressional District in Georgia, John Lewis, has lost his battle against cancer. The long-term Congressman died on Friday at age 80.
Until his death, Lewis was the longest-serving member of Congress from Georgia in his 17th term (34 years) and was the Dean of the Georgia Congressional delegation.
He was first elected into Congress in 1987 on his strong record of civil rights, among others. In 2011, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
Lewis, often referred to as the “Conscience of Congress” and a towering figure of the civil rights movement, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019. The iconic leader lost his wife, Lillian Lewis, in 2012 after battling a long illness.
