Jonathan leaves for UN General Assembly

President Goodluck Jonathan will today leave for the New York to attend the 66th Session of the United Nations, General Assembly (UNGA) and in his capacity as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), meet with the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Mr. Salil Shetty, on allegations of rising cases of human right abuse in the region.

He is expected to address the General Assembly on Wednesday.
President Jonathan would be hosted by the President of the United States of America, Mr Barrack Obama, for the second time this year, but this time in New York. Jonathan was a special guest of Obama in Washington DC, June this year.

Beside, a reception to be hosted by President Obama  in New York, Jonathan would also hold talks with President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil,  President Sebastian Pinera of Chile, President Mahinda Rajapaska of Sri Lanka, President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic, President Pal Schmitt of Hungary, President Mikhail Shaskashvili of Georgia and President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, as well as Prime Minister Pedro Coelho of Portugal and Japan’s new Prime Minister, Mr. Yoshihiko Noda.

The President who is said to be favourably disposed to the Amnesty meeting will take maximum advantage of the talks to correct wide range of unsubstantiated claims of human right abuses in Nigeria.
The meeting which was requested by the Amnesty group was contained in a letter dated August 12, 2011, and signed by the Head of Office and Representative of Amnesty International at the UN, Jose Luis Diaz and addressed to Permanent. Representative, Permanent Mission of Nigeria in New York, Her Excellency, Mrs Joy Ogwu.

The letter by Amnesty International reads in part: “we are writing today (August 12, 2011) to request a meeting with the head of the Nigerian delegation to the General Assembly on behalf of Mr. Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International.
