Kano: Fresh violence, three feared dead
Kano, State News Wednesday, April 20th, 2011Three persons were feared dead and several others wounded following a fresh breakdown of law and order in the metropolitan area of Kano yesterday. Several vehicles were alsdo vandalized as their owners tried to escape from the troubled spots to safe areas. The cars were vandalized by angry youths who also took advantage of the chaos to burn down motorcycles and set up fresh bonfires at different spots in the affected areas.
Areas immediately underseige included the Sabon Gari, a predominantly Christian residential area and Kawo, a predominantly Muslim community.
Although, nobody could precisely account for the cause of the renewed violence, it was gathered that some of those whose businesses were destroyed by the pro-Buhari protesters on Monday were unable to stomach the enormous damage visited on them.
But their reaction immediately elicited a counter-reaction from Muslim rioters in Kawo area who simply lashed out at Christian returnees who had come back home to pick a few items ahead of the curfew hours.
In reaction to the incident, the police in Kano warned residents to desist from spreading false rumours or face the consequences.
The police also frowned at the use of text messages to further aggravate the tensed situation in the state.
Speaking to the journalist, the Police Public Relations Officer, Magaji Majiya reminded the public that the dusk to dawn curfew imposed on the state is still in full force; even as he urged the general public to go about their normal businesses.
Meanwhile, the Kano Area Territory of the Apostolic Church has raised the alarm over the whereabouts of 15 children of the church who have been missing since the current mayhem. Area Superintendent of the Church, Pastor Felix Okunnola Olotu disclosed this during a press conference, while adding that as at the last count, eight of their churches in different parts of the Northwest have been completely burnt down by the post election rioters.
Pastor Olotu who also disclosed that one of their members was killed, noted that the burnt churches are in Naibawa, Zango Dakata, Dambatta, Jogana, Jahun in Jigawa State and Azare in Bauchi state.
The church also said that their members lost millions of naira as a result of the riot, just as they demanded that Federal Government must arrest and punish the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to others.
