Katsina: Low voter turnout recorded
Elections 2011, Katsina, NNP Elections 2011 Updates, State News Wednesday, April 27th, 2011Despite the early commencement of accreditation of voters at various polling stations for the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections, the exercise recorded a very low turnout in Katsina State.
Investigations carried out by the Nigerian Tribune across sections of eligible voters said that the low turnout was as a result of fear as recorded after last Saturday’s presidential election results.
However, the election, which started at about 8.04 a.m, was very peaceful and orderly, as no violence was recorded in all the areas visited.
At 3.40 p.m, voting was still going on in some polling units as voters strolled in to cast their votes at intervals.
Soldiers and police patrols were on the streets to enforce security and orderliness when accreditation started.
At the TV Hayin gada polling station in Dutsinma, the State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, who in company of his wife, Hajiya Fatima and their children Yamani and Usumanu got accredited at 10.05 a.m, later cast their vote at 12.45p.m.
However, the centre was not as busy as it had been in previous elections, as only 888 registered voters were accredited as against the expected 1,174 voter.
