Lassa fever kills 7 in Taraba

An outbreak of Lassa fever has killed seven people in Mayo-renewa district of Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State. Addressing journalists in Jalingo, yesterday, the State Commissioner of Health, Mustapha Hamman Gabdo said four people died at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, one at the Specialist Hospital also in Jalingo, while two who travelled to Federal Medical Centre, Gombe for treatment also died there.
He said already, the State Government has released drugs to the Federal Medical Centre and Specialist Hospital, Jalingo to treat reported cases, adding that at the moment, seven people have been admitted at the Federal Medical Centre and were responding to treatment.
The Commissioner described the symptoms of the disease as fever, body pain, vomiting of blood and passing blood stool and urged members of the public with such symptoms to report to the nearest health facility for immediate medical attention.
Gabdo said his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment was working to re-introduce monthly sanitation exercise throughout the state as a permanent measure to stem the spread of the killer disease.
