Letter: Abuja, theatre of looting
Abuja (FCT), Headlines, State News Monday, May 7th, 2012SIR: Abuja is gradually emerging as the headquarters of corruption incorporated because of concentration of power at the centre. The Nigerian federation as it is constituted at present is not and will not encourage dignity of labour or service delivery to already impoverished and deprived citizens. The concept of service for public good, progress and communal survival is alien to our leaders. Like vultures, they only congregate in Abuja to feed and loot public and private sector funds with impunity. The state of insecurity and dearth of infrastructural developments are not their immediate concern provided their family and cronies are enjoying and accessing state-of-the-art facilities. After all, almost one third of police personnel are allocated for their protection. What a nation!
A situation where virtually all the states of the federation are operating as employee of the Federal Government at the centre will not ignite competition for positive developments to spur economic activities. Until the Nigerian federation is restructured to fit modern practices of a union, Abuja will continue to be dominated by Mafioso and predatory animals on feeding frenzy. These predatory animals will not decentralise power from the centre because that would deflate their ego and make them irrelevant. They are contented seeing fellow citizens feeding from their crumbs and living at their mercy. The probe panels are just another waste of public funds and conduits to fritter away state resources into private pockets. It is another make-belief drama entirely designed to divert our attention, test our patience and intelligence. The probe panels are not deterring felons, but only serve to wet their appetites for more looting and scamming. What an irony.
With a judiciary that is ever ready to use the instruments of law to massage the ego of deviants, the coast is ever clear for these predators to feed on anything on sight. All the probe panels are nothing but public jamborees. Abuja is now a colony where all our wealth is supplied to predatory sharks. Nigeria as a union must be restructured before it finally slips into a failed state.
