LG disburses N2.2m loan to widows, aged women
Local Govt, Oyo, State News Friday, January 6th, 2012The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Saki West Local Government of Oyo State, Mr. Dapo Popoola, has emphasised the need for government at all levels to commit more resources to the grass roots in a bid to address the problem of poverty in the land.
Popoola made this remark on Wednesday, while disbursing N2.2m and another N400,000 to the people of the council area in line with the administration’s promise to eradicate poverty within the communities.
“Sums of N2.2m and N400,000 were disbursed as loan and grant respectively to people in the council area.
“The beneficiaries of the loan were women. We embarked on this scheme so as to assist our women, including the widows who are fending for themselves with the meagre resources at their disposal as a form of assistance,” the chairman said.
According to the council boss, each beneficiary of the scheme are given N20,000 free interest-oan payable within 10 months.
“The widows and the aged women are the beneficiaries of the grant of N10,000 each,” he said.
Popoola urged the beneficiaries of the loan to make judicious use of it and not to see it as an opportunity to spend recklessly. He also advised them to ensure that they repaid the loan on time so that others could benefit from the exercise.
Earlier in her address, the wife of the local government chairman, Modupe, expressed her appreciation to the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, for her support.
She urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture by repaying the loan promptly.
