Make Onyali-Omagbemi our sports minister – Toblow
Headlines, Sports, Track & Field Sunday, July 3rd, 2011Former African sprint queen, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi is on the ministerial wish list of President Goodluck Jonathan. Since her name was mentioned in the media there has been a buzz of activity around her and the coach who brought her to lime-light Tobias Igwe has urged Jonathan to make it happen.
Coach Igwe discovered the young Onyali-Omagbemi in a secondary school meet in Lagos in the 80’s. And she rose through the ranks to become an icon in Nigerian sports. She could make more history by becoming the first sports person to be appointed as minister in the 50 years of Nigeria.
“Making Onyali-Omagbemi sports minister would be the best thing that has happened to Nigeria sports. First it will motivate younger athletes to aspire to be great.
“Secondly she came from the grassroots and understands the problems facing our sports. It will be the first time a professional sports person is occupying the post in Nigeria,” Igwe argued.
There has been a clamor for a sports oriented person to be made sports minister in democratic Nigeria. But often political considerations took the shine off sound argument.
