Massive turnout in Kwara as voters defy rain
Elections 2011, Kwara, State News Sunday, April 10th, 2011
Voters defied rain in some parts of Ilorin, Kwara State, to vote during the National Assembly election on Saturday.
The exercise witnessed a large turnout of voters who conducted themselves peacefully and orderly during accreditation and election. As the voters were voting, the rain started but voters were undeterred.
The accreditation of voters started on time though there were isolated reports of late arrival of materials.
Kwara State Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who is the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kwara Central, was accredited at about 9.55am, while he voted at about 1.28pm with his wife at Ajikobi Ward, Opobiyi polling units 2, 5 and 6, Ilorin West, Kwara Central.
The strong man of Kwara Politics, Senator Olusola Saraki, was accredited at about 11am in the same ward, while the governorship candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, was later accredited. She voted at 2.30pm at the same ward.
The governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Dele Belgore, was seen on line for accreditation at about 9.00am at Oke-Ogun ward in Ode Magaji Ajenejun, Ilorin South, Kwara Central Senatorial District.
But a melodrama occurred about 9.15am at Emir Road, Ilorin, where over 13 journalists who had finished monitoring the accreditation at Oke-Ogun ward and were heading to the ward where the Sarakis were to be accredited, were held hostage for about 15 minutes by security operatives.
