N50bn fraud: Lawal, ex-minister, arrested
EFCC Politics, Latest Politics Thursday, February 10th, 2011A former minister of Works, Alhaji Hassan Lawal, was yesterday arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N50 billion fraud.
Lawal, who had also held sway at the labour ministry, arrested over his alleged involvement in fraud, abuse of office, and breach of government regulations and due process by awarding contracts to unregistered companies running into billions of naira.
While Lawal was in EFCC custody, operatives of the anti-graft commission were reportedly on the trail of some of his collaborators in the alleged scam. Details of how the alleged sleazy deals were perpetrated could not be ascertained at press time.
However, EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the ex-minister’s arrest when contacted, but declined further comments.
