NDLEA arrests 2 with 70kg Indian hemp
Headlines, NDLEA (Anti-Drug Agency) Tuesday, January 24th, 2012THE Bauchi State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Monday, paraded two suspected drug dealers arrested with 70 kilogrammes of Indian hemp, following a tip-off from members of the public.
Addressing journalsists while parading the suspects, the state commander of the agency, Mr Sule Momodu, said the command was informed on Sunday, that a bus was on its way to Bauchi from Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with a consigment of Indian hemp.
“On Sunday we got an information that a danfo bus was on its way to Bauchi from Gwagwalada in the FCT with a consignment of Indian hemp. Immediately, we set up three points with our men there, and as God would have it, when the vehicle got to a point just in front of Zaranda Hotel,Z it broke down,” Momodu said.
He informed that the Indian hemp, in 13 bags, was well concealed in the bus to the extent that no one could have suspected there was anything of such nature in it, but “our men were able to discover the 13 bags of Indian hemp concealed in the danfo bus.”
According to Momodu, the dealer, who is the owner of the 13 bags of the Indian hemp, had a well co-ordinated network and hardly associated himself with the Indian hemp, adding that this made it difficult for him to be suspected by anyone as a major dealer.
“All he does is when the drugs arrive, he sends his boys to collect it and takes it to an unknown location. We are aware of his activities and are trying to arrest him,” the commander said.
He, however, appealed to the Bauchi State House of Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the bill against drug abuse before it, noting that the passage of the bill would be an indication that the state lawmakerswere truly in the House to serve the people.
He added that the bill, if passed, would make the fight against illicit drugs in the state easier, as well as enhance the agency’s job in the state, which would ultimately make the state illicit-drugs free.
Speaking to journalists, one of the suspects, Mohammed Jibrin, popularly called “Kwaro”, admitted that the consignments were his.
The 22-year-old said his wife was not aware of the illegal business he was into, saying that, “if my wife gets to know that I have been arrested with indian hemp she will be very surprised because she knows me to be a bricklayer.”
