NDLEA arrests 84 drug suspects in 6 months in Ogun
Headlines, NDLEA (Anti-Drug Agency), Ogun, State News Monday, July 1st, 2013Abeokuta – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun arrested 84 suspected drug peddlers between January and June, the Commander, Mr Musa Fagge, has said.
Fagge told journalists in an interview on Monday in Abeokuta that the command also destroyed 73 hectares of Indian hemp farms in some forest reserves in the state.
He said that 46 of out of the 84 suspects were convicted and sentenced to various jail terms.
The commander noted that Indian hemp constituted the largest seizure, adding that it also seized cocaine and heroin.
Fagge said that drug trafficking had reduced in the state, and attributed the development to the sustained campaign by the agency against the menace of drug abuse.
He said the command would continue to strengthen its directorate of enlightenment and control of illicit drugs in order to educate the people on the dangers of drug abuse.
“We have only 23 grammes of cocaine among the drugs seized so far, while most of the seizures by the command are Indian hemp.
“We have a directorate set aside in all our commands; it is a drug reduction directorate to champion the issue of advocacy.
“The various commands have been charged to ensure that the issue of advocacy is given a pride place.
“It helps people to know the implications of drug abuse in order for them to make wise decisions to shun drug abuse,’’ he said.
Fagge said the agency would maintain close ties with other security agencies in order to get rid of illicit drug use and trafficking in the state. (NAN)wp_posts
