NFF staff grumble over poor state of Nigerian football (Anything to do with the poor and corrupt leadership of the NFF?)

There was an uneasy calm Monday at the secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as most of the members of staff of the federation were seen in groups discussing the state of the country’s football. The staff were particularly angry following the dwindling fortunes of the nation’s football which came to an all time low over the weekend when the national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets failed to qualify for the African championship slated for Madagascar next year. Dream Team Before the failure of the Manu Garba tutored side in the hands of their counterparts from Niger Republic, the Super Eagles had also failed to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the Flying Eagles crashing out of the 2017 African Youth Championship (AYC) coming up in Zambia.

The angry staff who confided in our Reporter decried the recent state of the game even as they squarely put the blame on the board of the federation which they said is largely populated by people who are not deep in the administration of football. According to them, the only honourable option would have been for the entire board to honourably resign to save the nation’s football from further decline. “Look at how we crashed from three international tournaments coming up next year and from the look of things, we may also not qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. “In fact the real danger in what has happened is that we may lose a generation of quality footballers with the failure of the Flying Eagles to be in Zambia AYC because that is the crop of players that would have progressed to the Super Eagles but all that is now lost. “Again the Golden Eaglets who are the defending champions of the FIFA U-17 championship will also not be there because the African championship will also be the qualifying tournament.”

They however advised the NFF to brace up for the politics of the game if they really want the country to qualify for the next World Cup ahead of group rivals; Cameroon, Zambia and Algeria. Staff
