NYSC orientation: ‘State govts ready to protect members’ •Reps order NYSC not to post corps members to crisis prone states

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured corps members who are already at their various orientation camps across the country that there would be adequate security to protect their lives and properties throughout their orientation and the service year.

The management, through the Public Relations Manager, Mrs Abosede Aderibigbe, stated that with this assurance, “prospective corps members should proceed to their respective camps for induction into the noble scheme.”

Aderibigbe added that the state governments had been mobilised to provide security at the various camps, insisting that all corps members would be protected.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, ordered the management of the NYSC to stop posting unwilling corps members to crisis prone states in the northern part of the country.

The House resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored by Honourable Peter Edeh, who asked the House “to completely bar NYSC from posting corps members to the affected states.” The motion was, however, modified to read “only unwilling corps members posted to the states.”

Some corps members posted to crisis prone northern states in the country had on Monday, besieged the NYSC national secretariat in Abuja to protest their posting to the states.

In a related development, in view of the spate of violence and insecurity in both Borno and Yobe states, the orientation programme for the two states will mow hold in Adamawa State.

The NYSC director in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Mr Abraham Chieze, told Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday that, only Abuja could speak on why orientation could not hold in Maiduguri.
