Ogun: Post-election violence: Govt evacuates 150 bers from Bauchi
Bauchi, Headlines, Ogun, State News Tuesday, April 26th, 2011No fewer than 150 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who are Ogun State indigenes were evacuated by the state government from Bauchi State following the post-election violence that engulfed the state.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Olukoya Adeleke-Adedoyin, disclosed this while receiving the corps members at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Monday, and urged the Federal Government to have a re-think about the programme.
He said the state government had to embark on the rescue mission in order to protect the lives of its indigenes who were serving their fatherland in the North.
He said that some of the corps members had vowed not to return to the North to complete their compulsory one-year programme.
The commissioner said Governor Gbenga Daniel received distress calls on Friday and directed his ministry to take action to ensure that indigenes of the state were returned home.
“We have come to receive our corpers who were trapped in Bacuhi, due to the aftermath of the presidential election saga. OGD had a distress call on Friday morning, and immediately sent the Ministry of Environment to go into action to make sure we make sure we evacuate those of Ogun State,” the commissioner said.
Adeleke-Adedoyin promised government readiness to address the plights of the corpers, by providing jobs for those that had completed their programmes.
“As the Commissioner for Environment, I have seen the situation and I must tell you that this will be my third time of going to the North to rescue my people. If I have my way, I will say honestly, there must be a re-think on the NYSC programme.
“Those who have escaped this terrible situation, we must make it possible for them not to go back there. They don’t want to go back, but we must address the situation.
“We are going to look into their complaints, they are in distress; government must do something for them. Those who have completed their programme, we will give them jobs. During the Jos crisis, we did similar thing, they have been asked to come back on Thursday to address their complaint,” he said.
