Only 15% Nigerian women have bank accounts -Study
Headlines, Women Politics Thursday, May 10th, 2012Only 15 per cent of Nigerian women have bank accounts with the women running only 20 per cent in the formal sector and 43 per cent in the informal sector, a study published by the British Council, Nigeria, has revealed.
According to the study entitled: “Gender In Nigeria Report 2012,” women’s contribution to economic growth was not captured because they were mostly found in the informal sector, adding that they were underrepresented in the formal sector of the country’s economy.
The report billed for launch today(Thursday) took into cognizance women in both the Northern and Southern part of the country and highlighted the realities of women in Nigeria and made recommendations on policies that could improve their lives.
The study also identified Nigeria as one of the countries with the highest maternal mortality ratio(MMR), saying the women that were dying were mostly those from the North-East, poor women, female giving birth before age 15 and those with serious genital cuttings, the highest maternal mortality ratio (MMR).
