Osun: Ejigbo boils over N5m donation to Cote d’Ivoire returnees
Headlines, Osun, State News Friday, April 22nd, 2011
A bloody violence, which erupted in Ejigbo Community of Osun State, on Thursday, has led to the death of one of the displaced Nigerians that returned from Cote d’Ivoire recently.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that troubled started when one of the returnees, who is an indigene, went to Ejigbo Local Government Council to demand his share of the N5m donated to returnees by the government.
The government had donated money to the returnees in batches. Hundreds of the returnees flooded Ejigbo, their native town, after political violence erupted in Cote d’Ivoire.
It was gathered that the returnee had gone to the council, hoping to receive his share of the money when an argument allegedly ensued between him and some officials.
Controversy has, however, trailed the death of the returnee with some people insinuating that he was beaten with a charm.
His death led to an uproar in the town as several returnees trooped to the council and attacked workers.
Commissioner of Police, Osun Command, Mr Peter Gana, had to deploy riot policemen in the town in order to check the growing violence.
Police Public Relations Officer, Osun Command, Mr Oluwagbemileke Taiwo, said nobody died in the fracas.
The Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Osun State, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, debunked the insinuation that an official of Osun State Youth Empowerment Scheme engaged the deceased in a brawl before he slumped and died.
Okanlawon said, “The sick returnee was being taken to Baptist Medical Centre, Ogbomoso, when he died. He wasn’t struck with charm by OYES official.”
